Carriacou Animal Shelter / Hospital

Carriacou Inmates
Welcome to the Carriacou Animal Shelter / Hospital fundraising web page.
Grenada is a tri-island nation. Our little sister isle of Carriacou lies some 23 miles to the north of Grenada with our baby sister isle of Petite Martinique just 3 miles east of Carriacou.
Carriacou is about 7 miles in length and around 2 miles across. Petit Martinique is around 1 mile in diameter with the population of both islands at around 6000 people. The main town of Carriacou is Hillsborough with smaller villages dotting the island.
As it stands there is no health care facility for the animals. The Ministry of Agriculture employs field technicians who do their best to care for the livestock and will tend to dogs when needed. There are many goats, sheep and some donkeys on the island. There are hundreds of dogs and cats needing health care and population control.

River Sallee
The lucky few dogs and cats needing surgery are collected by volunteers and have to suffer the long ferry ride over to Grenada where they are seen at the GSPCA hospital. Most of the dogs and cats needing care just die in the bush alone in pain and agony.
The GSPCA has served the island of Grenada for 71 years. We now need to branch out to help our volunteers on our little sister islands.
We hope to raise around $135,000.00 EC dollars which is about $ 50,000.00 US dollars. With the Ministry of Agriculture donating some land our goal is to build a 1200 sq foot, 4-room hospital/shelter. This building will include a reception/office, exam/treatment room, surgery room and indoor/outdoor kennel room and a small bathroom. Attached to the outside will be an overhang for large animal surgery.

Little boys with pups
Because of the water shortage in Carriacou a lot of the money will go towards water catchment/storage and septic. We need to collect at least 10,000 gallons of water to make it through the dry season.
As we progress I will be posting more information on this page so please come back and visit again. You can send your donations to:
We just received our first donation of $1000 US from JustGrenada http://www.justgrenada.co.uk
The are also offering discount travel for GSPCA members who book travel holidays from the UK to Grenada.
